{"id":146338,"date":"2016-08-24T13:33:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T11:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cavalor.com\/articles\/research-article-preventive-effects-nutraceuticals\/"},"modified":"2025-10-02T16:00:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-02T14:00:41","slug":"research-article-preventive-effects-nutraceuticals","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/cavalor.com\/en-us\/articles\/research-article-preventive-effects-nutraceuticals\/","title":{"rendered":"RESEARCH Article: Preventive effects of two nutraceuticals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Published in:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beva.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/evj.12629\">Equine Veterinary Journal<\/a>, Issue 4 July 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-preventive-effects-of-two-nutraceuticals-on-experimentally-induced-acute-synovitis\">The preventive effects of two nutraceuticals on experimentally induced acute synovitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d272673295\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0001-title\">Background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nutraceuticals are often used in the management of equine osteoarthritis, but scientific evidence of their efficacy is lacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0002-title\">Objectives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To study the preventive effects of two new nutraceuticals after the experimental induction of synovitis in comparison with positive and negative control treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0003-title\">Study design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Blinded, controlled, randomised experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0004-title\">Methods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Twenty-four healthy Standardbred horses were randomly allocated to supplement AT (multi-ingredient, 28 days), supplement HP (collagen hydrolysate, 60 days), meloxicam (4 days) or placebo (60 days). Synovitis was induced in the right intercarpal joint by intra-articular injection of 0.5 ng lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of&nbsp;<em>Escherichia coli<\/em>&nbsp;while treatments were continued. Blood and synovial fluid were sampled before treatment, immediately prior to LPS injection, and at 8, 24 and 48 h post-injection. Synovial fluid samples were analysed for total nucleated cell count (TNCC), total protein (TP) and selected biomarkers (prostaglandin E<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;[PGE<sub>2<\/sub>], interleukin-6 [IL-6], glycosaminoglycans [GAGs], type II collagen synthesis [CPII], matrix metalloproteinase [MMP]). Lameness was scored by visual examination and pressure plate analysis immediately prior to LPS injection, and at 8, 24 and 48 h post-injection. Clinical examinations were performed before treatment, immediately prior to LPS injection, at 2, 4 and 6 h post-injection, and then twice per day during the test period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0005-title\">Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before treatment and intra-articular challenge, there were no statistically significant differences among the treatment groups for any of the parameters. After intra-articular challenge, the placebo group showed significantly higher synovial fluid TP, TNCC and PGE<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;compared with the meloxicam group, although the model did not induce a relevant amount of lameness. Both nutraceuticals resulted in significantly lower synovial fluid TP, TNCC and PGE<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;compared with placebo. No statistical differences in IL-6, GAGs, CPII or MMPs were observed among treatment groups. No adverse effects were observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0006-title\">Main limitations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite evidence of synovitis, lameness was too mild to detect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"evj12629-sec-0007-title\">Conclusions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The preventive administration of these nutraceuticals showed anti-inflammatory effects in this validated synovitis model.
