Mare and foal feed a smart and strong start!

Feeding with a mare and/or foal feed is essential to support both your mare and foal during pregnancy and beyond. Breeding a foal is a beautiful and special process. It is every breeder's desire to breed a healthy and strong foal that can develop into a healthy horse. Good management, such as stabling, outdoor grazing and social contact, are important factors. In addition, nutrition is one of the most important building blocks for a foal to grow into a healthy, strong and successful sport horse. At Cavalor, we have a full range of mare feeds and foal feeds to give your future champion a strong start! Download our white paper now and find out everything you need to know about the nutritional needs of mare and foal.

When do you start feeding a mare pellet

From the 7th month of gestation, it is necessary to provide a mare feed. It is especially important that the mare pellet contains sufficient minerals in addition to a lot of proteins, such as copper, zinc, manganese, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. From the 8th month onwards, the mare cannot provide sufficient copper herself. Sufficient copper is essential to prevent later joint problems in the foal. Cavalor Probreed Mix or pellet is an excellent choice as a mare feed for your pregnant mare. Lactating mares also have an increased need for energy and protein to be able to provide milk production and to recover after pregnancy.

When do you start feeding with a foal pellet?

At Cavalor, we believe that a strong start starts with good nutrition. Providing foal feed is crucial in this process. Introduce your foal to concentrates in the form of a foal pellet one month before weaning. Cavalor Start&Go Soft is an easily digestible and tasty foal pellet for a smooth transition after lactation. We recommend feeding Cavalor Start & Go up to one month after weaning and then gradually switching to the mare pellet (Cavalor Probreed) until the age of one year.

From the age of one, growth slows down and energy and protein requirements change. However, the need for a good combination of copper, zinc and manganese remains high. Cavalor Juniorix ensures steady growth and development from yearling to adult horse and contributes to musculoskeletal and bone support.

No more problems or sweet itch
After trying different feeds, I’ve finally found the right one for my Shetland mare, Annie. I was really worried about her last year, but after changing her management (grazing muzzle and a handful of Fiberforce per day), she’s like a completely different pony!

It’s perfect for a laid-back leisure horse!
My horse has always been a bit lazy more power would be nice. Before I started giving her Cavalor Perfomix, I had to use a lot of leg but I still didn’t manage to get her going forwards. I noticed a big difference even after just a few days and half a scoop of the feed.

A mane to be proud of!
My Friesian's mane is 160 cm long. I care for it with Star Shine to let my superstar shine at every competition, where I always hear lots of “oh’s” and “wow’s” from the spectators.

The ultimate cool-down
I’ve recently been treating my pony with Cavalor Muscle Cooler following intensive training. There’s no doubt that his muscles are less stiff than they used to be after a hard training session. Hot tendons and muscles return to normal body temperature much faster after using the Muscle Cooler.

The results are incredible!
I was looking for a feed for my 17-year-old mare who needs a low-sugar diet, as she is unable to metabolise the high sugar content of other horse feeds. That’s how I came upon Cavalor Fiberforce. My horse loves this mix and hasn’t had any excess muscle acidity since I started feeding it!

It’s a great feed
Cavalor Tradition Apple really is a brilliant feed! My pony is always good and waits until I give her some. She is generally greedy and she especially likes the apple pieces. The feed has improved her appearance and her coat has a wonderful shine.
