Keep it cool: Cooling Gel and More for Horses

Whether you’re training for a Grand Prix or just riding at home, a good cool down is just as important as a warm up. With a cooling gel for horses, you can cool down and support his tendons and muscles  even more effectively. Of course, a cooling gel alone is not enough; it is important that you trot out and walk out your horse properly after a workout so that he has caught his breath before you put him back in the pasture or stable. With a good cooling down, injuries can be prevented.

Why is a cool down important?

The horse’s body should gradually return to a state of rest after training. This prevents many injuries and ensures that your horse can remain a “happy athlete”. During exercise, the horse’s heart rate and body temperature increase. With every effort above the anaerobic threshold, the level of lactic acid in the blood also rises. By cooling down properly, the horse can break down this lactic acid, relax the muscles, catch its breath and lower its body temperature. A cooling gel such as the Cavalor Muscle Cooler or Cavalor Coolsens helps to bring your horse’s body temperature back down so that he can recover from training.

How do you apply a cooling gel to horses?

You apply a cooling gel after riding. You can apply a thin layer to the muscles of the back and neck, for example. But you should not forget the tendons in the legs either. Especially when using tendon pads, the tendons quickly become very hot during a training session. It is thus advisable to apply some cooling gel after an intensive training session. At Cavalor, we have four products that can support your horse’s cooling down:

  • Cavalor Muscle cooler: Cooling gel for joints, tendons and muscles. Supports recovery, immediate effect.
  • Cavalor CoolSens: Refreshing and cooling lotion based on menthol and eucalyptus. Does not need to be rinsed out.
  • Cavalor Freebute Gel: deep-acting gel with cooling effect for tired muscles, joints and tendons.
  • Cavalor Ice Clay: is a clay mainly applied to the legs to relax overworked muscles and tendons and prevent swelling.
