In the equestrian world, the spotlight often shines on riders and their remarkable achievements. But behind every triumph stands a dedicated team, and at the heart of that team is the groom – the unsung hero whose tireless work ensures horses are not only prepared to perform but are thriving in every sense. This year, the Cavalor FEI Best Groom Award 2024 was presented to Bettina Cardinael, a shining example of care, dedication, and love for horses.
A Path Less Expected
Bettina’s journey into the world of horses wasn’t conventional. “I’m not from a horsey family,” she explains. “So it was not the natural path for me. It took some time to feel confident that this was my path.” Despite not growing up with horses, her passion drove her to excel in a demanding role that requires patience, perseverance, and an unshakable love for the animals.
Her unconventional background shaped her perspective as a groom. “As grooms, we spend more time with horses than with humans,” Bettina reflects. “I know Origi better than I know some of my friends or family. We know each other by heart, and that’s super nice.” This deep connection enables her to support her horses in ways that go far beyond physical care, extending to their emotional well-being.
The Unsung Hero
Bettina embodies what it means to be an exceptional groom. Her attention to detail, unwavering dedication, and ability to anticipate her horses’ needs make her an integral part of Belgian eventing athlete Lara De Liedekerke-Meier’s team. Lara highlights this, saying, “I know Bettina loves my horses. Sometimes she sees things nobody else would, and that is so important.”
For Bettina, the role of a groom is about balance – treating horses as top athletes while respecting their natural instincts and needs. “It’s very important to look after the horses the way they deserve it. They are athletes, but they’re also animals. They need to graze, be in the field, and be together,” she explains.
This balance, combined with her ability to create routines that comfort and inspire confidence in her horses, is part of what makes Bettina unique. One of her favorite rituals involves hiding treats in her hand and letting the horses guess which hand holds the reward. This playful interaction builds trust and keeps the horses relaxed, even in high-pressure environments.
A Milestone Year
Bettina’s work has been pivotal in a landmark year for De Liedekerke-Meier. From preparing Hooney d’Arville for victory at the CCI5* in Lumühlen to supporting Origi during the Paris 2024 Olympics, her meticulous care and insight have played a key role in these achievements.
“To be a good groom, you have to be really hard-working and have an eye for detail,” Bettina says. “You have to be humble. Don’t assume you know everything. Ask for help when you need it. And you need to love horses – you need to love both the horses and the sport.”
Why Cavalor Supports the Best Groom Award
Cavalor’s commitment to recognizing grooms like Bettina stems from its core belief that they are the voice of the horse. Monique Van Hal, Cavalor’s Brand & Customer Experience Manager, expressed this sentiment during the award presentation:
“Grooms have always been part of the Cavalor family. The input and feedback of grooms are of immense importance because horses cannot tell us if they like a product or not. Grooms are the voice of the horse – they look after them in the way they deserve and know all their needs.
With this award, we want to show our respect for their dedication to the health and well-being of horses and riders. I am truly honored to hand the Cavalor Groom Award to a true star behind the scenes.”
A Star Behind the Scenes
For Bettina, it’s not just about the big moments; it’s about the everyday connection with her horses. “What I love most about being a groom is obviously the horses,” she shares. “It’s their personalities, their quirks, and the way they respond when you truly know them.”
Her story serves as a reminder of the tireless dedication, skill, and heart that grooms bring to the equestrian world. Bettina Cardinael’s work goes beyond her responsibilities – it’s a testament to her love for the horses and her commitment to their happiness and success.
With the Cavalor FEI Best Groom Award, Bettina is celebrated as a true star behind the scenes. Her journey inspires not just those in the equestrian community but all who value the power of passion and dedication.
