Concentrates for horses
In addition to roughage, concentrates are an important addition to the diet of horses. Through concentrates, you can supplement certain minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are lacking in roughage. Choosing the right type of concentrate for your horse is not always easy, there is a lot of choice and how do you actually know what your horse needs? Some basic knowledge of vitamins, minerals and the various nutrients will help you make the right choice for your horse. Of course, we are happy to help you with that at Cavalor!
Muesli or pellets?
If you have to make a choice in the type of concentrate you can feed your horse, you quickly end up with a muesli or pellets. As you may have noticed, at Cavalor we mainly have mueslis in our range. The two main reasons we chose this are:
More structure: A muesli contains more structure than pellets. As a result, more chewing movements are required, which results in higher saliva production. A higher saliva production in turn ensures that a good buffer of sodium carbonate is built up, which neutralises stomach acid. Fun fact: Did you know that one kilo of muesli provides 900 chewing movements compared to 600 chewing movements for one kilo of pellets?
Visible ingredients: In a muesli, the ingredients are not compressed into pellets and so you can see exactly what your horse is being fed.
You can read the complete philosophy behind the concentrates from Cavalor in our blog!
Various levels of concentrate
To make it easier to choose which type of concentrate is suitable for your horse, we have also split the range into levels in addition to the various categories.
LEVEL 1: for horses trained recreationally to lightly or sensitive horses
LEVEL 2: for horses that are regularly and actively trained
LEVEL 3: for horses that are trained very regularly and intensively
LEVEL 4 & 5: for horses that deliver top performances
Using 3 simple steps, you can determine which Cavalor muesli or pellet is suitable as a concentrate for your horse.
