Find your feed
“Which feed is best for my horse?” It is a question we are asked almost every day at Cavalor. Yet there is no standard answer. Every horse is different – not only in terms of training intensity, but also in how the horse feels to ride. That is why Cavalor developed the Levels: a practical guide that helps you select the right sport feed more quickly, tailored to your horse’s needs.
Finding your way through the Cavalor range

STEP 1: Choose one of the categories
STEP 2: Determine the right level or specific need
STEP 3: Check the claims

We’ll guide you through these 3 steps.

Cavalor categories

Cavalor feeds are divided into 5 categories. They are easy to recognise by their colour and title. This classification helps you make an initial choice:

  • HARMONY: A horse used for recreational riding.
  • SPORT: A horse that needs to perform.
  • BALANCER: A horse that does not receive a complete feed or temporarily has specific needs.
  • SPECIAL CARE: A horse with special needs.
  • BREEDING: A pregnant or lactating mare, foal or young horse (under 3 years old).
The Cavalor levels help you choose

The Levels are based on two factors:

  • training intensity
  • your horse’s rideability

By rideability, we mean the feel your horse gives you in the saddle: focus, control, balance and how easily your horse can be ridden. Does your horse have enough energy? Does it remain focused during work? Or does it feel just a little too fresh, sharp or
explosive?

That feel helps determine whether you should move up or down a level. It is not a judgement of your horse, but a tool to align nutrition more closely with the work you ask of it. Not sure which level suits your horse best? Start by honestly assessing the training load and the feel under saddle. From there, the Cavalor Levels will guide you towards the right feed.

When should you choose which level?

Are you already feeding a Cavalor feed and are you happy with how well your horse copes with training in terms of fitness and muscle condition? And with how your horse feels to ride? Then you’ve found the right feed!

Have you noticed? The levels on our sport feeds have changed. It’s important to know that nothing about the feeds themselves has changed. For example, does your horse eat Performix? It is still exactly the same feed, even though Performix has moved from level 2 to level 3. So make sure you check the product name, as this has remained exactly the same.

So why did we change the levels? With the new packaging, Tradition Mix and Strucomix have also been given a level: level 1. As a result, the sport feeds have moved up one level.

Are you already feeding a Cavalor feed, but expect more from your horse and/or notice the following?

“My horse is too sluggish and struggles to maintain energy throughout the training session.” LEVEL UP > choose one of our Cavalor feeds one level higher.

Do you expect less from your horse and/or notice the following?

“I’d like my horse to be a little calmer. My horse is often too energetic or too fresh at the start of training.” LEVEL DOWN > choose one of our Cavalor feeds one level lower.

How do you determine which level to start with?

The Cavalor levels make it easy to match your horse’s nutrition to the specific needs of both horse and rider. Are you new to Cavalor feeds and would you like to get started? Choose your first feed based on these guidelines:

  • LEVEL 1: for horses used for recreational riding or light training, or sensitive horses (recreational and nervous horses)
  • LEVEL 2: for horses that are trained regularly and actively (active horses)
  • LEVEL 3: for horses that are trained very regularly and intensively (sport horses)
  • LEVEL 4 & 5: for horses performing at the highest level of sport (performance horses)
A special look for horses performing at the highest level (levels 4 and 5)

Horses that need to perform, especially at a high level, can often benefit from some extra support. The products in Cavalor’s ‘high performance’ range – both feeds and supplements – have been specially developed for top-level sport horses. They give these horses that little bit extra, because it’s the details that make the difference. You can recognise the ‘high performance’ products by their silver look and highly effective formulas.

Pictograms on the packaging provide more detailed information

After step 1: choosing the right category, and step 2: choosing the right level or need, it’s time for the final step. Step 3: check the claims. Simple and clear claims explain the benefits of each product. Every claim has been carefully formulated and substantiated based on both science and practice. The claims are presented as clear pictograms, giving you more detailed information at a glance about the key benefits and ingredients of each feed.
